Conversion

MMS have carried out many major conversions, including lengthening vessels, fitting additional accommodation units along with extra ferry car decks. No job is too big or too small.

The shipyard is well equipped to deal with any projects and has a cradle within dry dock 1, which is used for lengthening jobs and specialist vessels. Items can be fabricated undercover in the new build workshop, which is on rails and retractable, allowing easy load out, which can be directly transported to or onto the vessel if required.

The vessel pictured below was cut into segments, road transported to MMS and completely rebuilt including the vessel’s length and beam and renamed the MMS Humber Engineer. Your vessel is in safe hands with our experienced team.

MMS Off-Roader

In 2021, MMS purchased an ex-tanker barge called the Humber Princess, and following a major conversion and upgrading program, the newly completed barge was named the Off-Roader by Bobby Langton, the then 10 year old son of Managing Director, Rob Langton.

The MMS Off-Roader was converted to offer a lower carbon emission alternative to cargo transportation across Yorkshire and the Humber region. With its 500 tonne capacity each barge can transport the equivalent of up to 25 Lorries hence the barge being named the “Off-Roader”, reducing CO2 emissions, traffic congestion and helping to make the roads safer.

GT AirWing

In January 2025, MMS became the first shipyard in the UK to assemble and fit the advanced GT AirWing rigid sail on a ship called the Vectis Progress, owned by Carisbrooke Shipping.

The MMS shipyard was chosen by GT AirWing and Carisbrooke Shipping following months of planning and preparation between the three parties. The MMS fabrication team modified the forward deck structure, adding 20 tonnes of stiffening plate to hold the 50-meter-high wing weighing 35 tonnes.

When finished, the full assembled wing was attached to the forward deck structure, held in position by two cranes whilst our fitters attached the wing to the base plate on the ship from inside the wing. The whole project was completed safely and quickly.

Mike Kane – the then undersecretary of state at the Dept for Transport – visited our shipyard in March 2025 accompanied by several national news teams to view the finished AirWing on the Vectis progress.

MMS are proud to have worked on the GT AirWing project, completing the job safely, on time and to the satisfaction of all parties. MMS were able to provide all the services on this project including steelwork and fabrication, engineering and fitting, painting, coating and electrical installation – all carried out by skilled experienced workers. To date, MMS are the only shipyard in the UK to manufacture, install and fit an AirWing to a vessel, placing MMS shipyard at the top of the list for future projects of this type.
